Before eCrypt Me was ready for use, I relied on Outlook and our Company’s Exchange server to handle my email. I did then, and still do, frequently have the need to send large documents to people I work with, and vividly recall the frustration of realizing, “darn this is too big to email”, trying to compress the document into a zip file and realizing it was still too large to email. I would ultimately be forced to use an FTP service to relay the document. This ate up a lot of my time and put at least a couple of gray hairs on my head.
This morning I was emailing a presentation to Brad for review, and it occurred to me, “hey this file is pretty big, and here I am, sipping my coffee and smiling”. The difference? I was using eCrypt Me. So I thought, why not run a little test to see if eCrypt Me really does process large documents faster than Outlook and Exchange.
I composed a new email in Outlook, addressed it to another Exchange email address I monitor, and proceeded to attach a 5.6MB file to the email. I started this at 9:54 am. By the time the email left my Outbox it was 10:00 am, 6 minutes later. It wasn’t until 10:01 am that I received the email in the other Inbox. 7 minutes waiting for an email is like watching grass grow. And that’s without encryption.
Then I switched to eCrypt Me, composed a new email to another Identity I monitor, and attached the file. I started at 10:03 am. I received the email in my Inbox at 10:05 am. 2 minutes. That’s less hat a third of the time it took Outlook and Exchange to process the exact same attachment, and eCrypt Me encrypted it too!
In my previous life I worked for a company that implemented a very popular server-based encryption solution into their infrastructure, they called it pretty good. My recollection however was that aside from the time it took Outlook and Exchange to process it, I could easily count on an additional 3-5 minutes in processing time for the encryption to complete. So frankly, most of the time I’d click “no” when prompted whether to encrypt the email or not, as did my colleagues, simply to save time and be more productive.
So in short, hats off to our development team, I feel like I got time back in my day and the more I can accomplish today, the less I have to do tomorrow. Try eCrypt Me and see how it can increase your productivity while limiting liability.
