Recently, Al Lewis, veteran journalist and columnist for Dow Jones Newswires, reported on eCrypt on MarketWatch.com.

Check out what he had to say below:

Tiny tech start-up lures high-powered backers

Commentary: eCrypt hopes to make email security a snap

By Al Lewis

DENVER (MarketWatch) — It is the tiniest of tech start-ups in Boulder, Colo., with a string of quarterly losses and a stock that trades for pennies.

It has no employees. Its founders came from Canada. Its financial reports include a “going concern statement” that raises “significant doubts” as to whether the company will even survive.

Nevertheless, eCrypt Technologies Inc. has been quietly loading its board with directors touting high-powered U.S. military and homeland security connections.

This includes former Republican Rep. Curt Weldon from Pennsylvania, who served in Congress for 20 years and recently became eCrypt’s chairman. When Weldon retired in 2007 he was vice chairman of both the Armed Services Committee and the Homeland Security Committee.

Then there is Jay M. Cohen, a former rear admiral in the U.S. Navy who was under secretary for science & technology at the Department of Homeland Security. Cohen is now a principal in The Chertoff Group, a consulting group co-founded by former Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff.

Then there is Erik Mettala, the cyber chief scientist in the national security global business unit of research and development company Battelle Memorial Institute. Mettala had a 22-year career in the Army, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. Before joining Battelle, he worked for McAfee, developing antivirus, antispam, intrusion-prevention applications.

What is all this firepower doing at a company whose shares have traded at as low as a dime in the past year?

“We’re a development-stage company,” eCrypt Chief Executive Brad Lever said. “We’ve been under the radar. … But we plan to have a very strong foundation to embrace the very significant opportunity that’s coming our way.”

Lever, Weldon and Cohen were kind enough to take my phone calls. But I am still somewhat afraid that if I really learned all what these guys were up to, I could end up in Guantanamo.

In a world of cyber warfare, embarrassing Wikileaks exposes, rumors of impending viral attacks on nuclear reactors and soldiers checking emails on battlefields, eCrypt has developed software that encrypts emails sent from any Internet-connected device.

Lever said the company is now rolling out military-grade email-security services for businesses and consumers at ecryptinc.com.

Founded in 2007, eCrypt is mostly the sweat of Lever and two other young brainiacs, Gabe Rosu and Kasia Zukowska. Their first big break came in a relationship with Research in Motion Ltd., the Canadian company that makes Blackberry smartphones.

Now they are poised to encrypt emails from any device.

“We’ve been concerned about Internet security for our military… for almost two decades,” said Weldon, the former congressman. “Unfortunately, there’s not been this attention for the public, and we’re seeing massive amounts of PDAs and Blackberrys being sold.”

The bottom line is this: When emails aren’t safe, America isn’t safe.

“The mom or dad with a son or daughter overseas in the military need to make sure that when they communicate, it’s not being intercepted,” Weldon explained.

Obviously, lawyers, doctors, accountants and other professionals need to ensure emails containing confidential information only go to intended recipients. Consumers need to be ever-vigilant against identity theft. And if you are an employee of any large corporation, you might want to encrypt any email in which you are talking smack about your boss. But this isn’t a habit, even when it should be.

Sometimes, military-grade encryption software requires so many steps, people let down their guards and decide not to use it, Cohen said.

“You’ve got to remember passwords, and it’s onerous” using the military-grade encryption software, said Cohen, who was once tasked with the Navy’s response to the Y2K threat.

In contrast, he said, “the only difference between a normal email and an eCrypt email is about a one-to-two-second hesitation.”

Technology companies from Microsoft Corp. to Google Inc. sell software and offer email accounts that are all-too vulnerable to hacking. Since the advent of targeted online advertising, they have stood to make more money letting information leak out than holding it in, which is why it may be up to a little company to save us.

Investor Strato Malamas of Vancouver, British Columbia, said he bought a stake in eCrypt because he envisions it becoming part of the nomenclature as consumers learn more about the increasing dangers they face sending emails.

“You know how people say ’Google it’ or ‘text it’?” he said. “One day we’ll be saying ‘eCrypt it.’”

Al Lewis is a columnist for Dow Jones Newswires.

Privacy and confidentiality are paramount to the members of OTI and their clients, and encryption is the only technological means of ensuring both.

As a way of inaugurating the relationship with OTI, co-founder Kasia Zukowska has contributed an article entitled, Practical Magic, which demystifies encryption to the Institute’s quarterly publication, TILT Magazine – Therapeutic Innovations in Light of Technology. eCrypt has also commenced an Affinity Program for OTI members to support them in incorporating encryption technology into their practices. As part of the program, members are tendered free eCrypt Me accounts for their clients.

“We are delighted to welcome eCrypt into our group of ethically verified organizations, and look forward to a long and fruitful relationship with them,”

Says Dr. Kate Anthony, co-founder of the Online Therapy Institute.

“eCrypt Me was designed to enable everyone, regardless of tech savvy, to embrace information security into their personal and work lives.”

Says Brad Lever, eCrypt Technologies CEO.

“Helping professionals have far more important things to do than worry about configuring security technologies. With eCrypt Me they are able to focus on their clients, with the piece of mind that their interactions are private and confidential. We are very happy that we can contribute in this way, and excited about the potential of this relationship.”

Encryption is often labelled as the last refuge of criminals an near-do-wells by law enforcement and other authorities. They often conjure up ticking time bomb scenarios that almost seem to be plot devices from the TV show ’24′ to justify its negative image. The prevailing logic is that if you are not doing anything bad, you should have nothing to hide if law enforcement comes knocking. Indeed, I run across many articles such as this one from physorg.com that talks about a research paper by UK and US researchers that states once a drive is encrypted, law enforcement is pretty much SOL. They go on to state that law enforcement needs to do more to research ways to subvert encryption on drives.

So modern encryption techniques can easily thwart law enforcement efforts to read data from seized computers. I say that’s a good thing. I’m glad that with some effort on my part, I can be reasonably assured that my data will remain protected even from the best efforts of law enforcement (short of me using a poor passphrase or doing something stupid).

Now, the common reaction to this is that I am anti-authoritarian or up to no good. Far from it. My viewpoint is that if modern crypto techniques are capable of stopping law enforcement, they should be able to stop most everyone else as well because if law enforcement can get in, everyone else can too.

Protecting data today is of paramount concern. In this digital economy, information is currency and has immense value. Protecting that is more important than ever because on the internet, you are 100 milliseconds away from every jerk on the planet. On a sheer technical level, there is no difference between what techniques law enforcement can use to access data and someone else with less honourable intentions (law enforcement is even more hamstrung due to privacy laws, etc). Television and movies always seem to depict that law enforcement having some special tool to bypass security on computers. Well, thanks to the internet, any such tool that gets created for law enforcement is usually available online in very short order to anyone with a search engine. Such a thing happened with Microsoft’s Computer Online Forensic Evidence Extractor which was leaked not long after its creation and distribution to law enforcement.

The phrase “You should have nothing to hide” is often used in these situations to vilify encryption that can thwart law enforcement, but I usually add “…But I don’t have everything to share either”. It’s my data and I want to ensure it stays that way. If protecting my data inconveniences law enforcement, I am fine with that and so should everyone else.

eCrypt Expands Reach to iPhone Users Worldwide With Secure Email Application

BOULDER, COLORADO – Dec. 14, 2011 – Last year eCrypt Technologies Inc. (OTCBB:ECRY), developer of easy to use encryption solutions, announced that the Company was setting its sights on iPhone users. Today eCrypt announces that it is finalizing the development of “eCrypt Me for iPhone,” to be released on the iTunes App Store.

eCrypt Me for iPhone is a mobile application that connects to the web based eCrypt Me platform, allowing users to send and receive secure emails and attachments from their iPhone. eCrypt Me secured emails are shielded from hackers, cyber criminals and other unwanted intruders. By leveraging the eCrypt Me service, the app offers the highest level of encryption commercially available and provides complete end-to-end security for emails and attachments on the iPhone.

“For many people, their smartphone is their key communications tool,” says eCrypt CEO Brad Lever. “By developing an app specifically for the iPhone, we are able to increase the level of convenience to our subscribers, and expand our market to those iPhone users who rely on the iTunes App Store to source solutions for their smartphone. There are very few email security solutions currently available to iPhone users, and none comparable to eCrypt Me. We are very excited to bring this product to a whole new audience.”

In January of this year, Apple announced that it has sold over 50 million iPhones, and currently has a market share of 29% in the US alone. Cannacord Genuity analyst T. Michael Walkley claims that the iPhone’s market share is set to increase 43% globally, suggesting extremely strong growth for the iPhone.

The initial release of eCrypt Me for iPhone is the first on the roadmap of apps for mobile devices, and a part of the Company’s strategy to increase awareness to the eCrypt Me platform.
